Kellogg's Tour 1994

The Peloton near the top of "The Struggle"

Down in Ambleside there had been an accident when a car ignored police warnings and drove into the path of the cyclists. Brian Smith was the man most affected and really did struggle, painfully, up the hill with a badly injured arm.

The incident triggered something of a revolt by the regrouped riders a few miles down the road. The race ground to a halt and, for a while, looked like coming to a premature end.

(which gave the rest of us time to get to the finish line!)

Hurts don't it!

Tail-enders start to look reassuringly human as they near the summit...

but still no sign of Brian Smith at this stage.

The finish (and the usual struggle to get a clear view)

1. Wiebren Veenstra (Collstrop)

2. Olaf Ludwig (Telekom)

3. Jan Svorada (Lampre)

Jan Svorada took the green jersey and went on to a stage win in Manchester.
Is it just me, or does Alan Peiper look just a bit sinister here?

Maurizio Fondriest (with stage wins in Glasgow and Bolton) kept the yellow jersey right through to become the overall winner of the tour.
